Here is a picture of my Targa Red TP Vitesse:
Second picture, left of course one of the famous publicity Vitesses in
the ROE97?Y registration sequence.
My interest in SD1's comes from my father owning three. First was a
very early 2600 in 1977 (UUJ990S), this was replaced by a 3500 in
early 1979 (AUJ808T). He then had a gap (of an MG Montego!), before
getting a Vitesse TP in 1988 (as the second owner - D363TUJ). Yeah,
all three were 'UJ' registrations, which is Shropshire.
First two are long gone, but the Vitesse. Well, I tried to look for this
before getting my Vitesse. Just after I got my car, a friend just
happened across TUJ in front of someone's house on the Wirral!
It subsequently appeared on eBay, but is a basket case by all
accounts (and was actually pretty rusty when my father sold it in
1992/3). |

Lovely Chris!
Though all this gorping and drooling over Vitesse's is dangerous, I've now found myself really wanting another!
I wish my old Targa Vitesse was as half as good as yours (and Steve's), I'd of never have sold it if it was! |

Ha! Funny, remembering registration marks and eBay cars....
Yes, it was on eBay. Nearly 2 years ago now. Was actually on three
times. First time it sold for, wait for it, 10 million quid (or was it 1
million). A scammer who offered the usual dud cheque and send the
car to this port. Second time it was bought by one of the more
(in)famous SD1 'collectors' who pulled out for some reason.
Seller hung on to the car over Christmas 2004 (think I viewed it first
after the second eBay auction), then put it back on eBay a third time
after I ummed and arred too much. Spurred me on and I dashed
down and did the deal and it was removed from eBay.
The car is full of stories - even the registration number has a story
behind it!
Will sort some more pics.... |

The Vitesse is still at the bodyshop! It went in the start of October
for the odd rust scab to be sorted, boot underside done (and new
underseal), sort a large hole in the passenger footwell (caused
by a leaking brake line, at some point in it's life) and a new
windscreen (was non-original non-toptinted, very badly installed
and was starting to delaminate).
Anyhow, the place that's doing it normally does insurance work, so
they happily fit the restoration around that. So it's a case of it'll
be done, eventually. Pretty sure it'll be done by this time next week.... |

Found an extra pic of my Vitesse, from an unsual angle
And a couple of pictures taken by a mate who happened
across my dad's old Vitesse (he sold it in about 1992) - these
pictures from early 2005. The car looks original and restorable,
but I believe the car was parted out (as is the case with so many
SD1s).

I'm biased! All four Vitesse colours suit the car though. Black is a
tad anonymous, though you can pretend to be Special Branch
There is a white Vitesse around which is particularly as it's probably
unique (white from new, not a respray or ex-rozzer car). I also
remember seeing a light metallic blue (Zircon?) Vitesse when the cars
were new. Any other non-black/moonraker/targa/silverleaf (from new)
Vitesses around? |

TUJ was found a month or so after I bought my Vitesse. Perhaps a blessing as I'd have
bought TUJ and then spent 2 years restoring it, rather than buying a complete usable
Vitesse (and spending 2 years restoring that - !). The owner of TUJ at the time the
photographs were taken described the guy he bought it off - which matched the description
of who my father sold it to!
TUJ popped up on eBay some months later and I was tempted (it didn't sell for the reserve).
But what would you do with 2 identical targa red Vitesses? I couldn't buy it and break for
parts.
I've now been told that TUJ is being restored, so perhaps I'll get tempted again....
Oh for a big garage! |
