The SD1 Track Control Arm, I have read everwhere that they are a common MOT Failure, but what goes wrong with them to fail an MOT?

Im wanting to know if mine are ok on my new 'project' but to me they just look like a lump of metal with a rubber bit on the end.

Can you buy that rubber bit on its own?

The most common think to look for and this applies to any Track rod end is the rubber perishing and or splitting. They only cost, £15 a pair on E bay and probably some Motor Factors. To save time and money if in doubt renew them. Not going to cost much in labour either if you can't do it yourself.

Hi Thanks for that

I can this part as a whole item, but not the flexible rubber part that seems to have split on mine, do I have to replace the whole arm?

You mean the rubber boot?. I've never seen it sold seperately though you may be able to match one up from another car/application.

But if the boot has a split in it, water/dirt may have got in and compromised the ball joint life. So as the're cheap enough at the moment it may be best/easier to just replace the complete arm.

Sorry i made a mistake, i see you are on about Track Control Arms. You will need the whole arm. Rimmers have loads of these now and the prices are still reasonable. Obviously not £15 for the pair as thats Track rod ends! Embarassed I think the TCA's are £29 each. If you are worried get the garage to look over them first.
