hi all just took the rover on a hoiday about 300 ks round trip towing a small van about 800 kilos so not to heavy .
twas me and the misses and 3 rugrats aged 14 to 5 and all their crap.....
but back to the car she ran realy well and got rather good economy was running witha 2006 mitsubishi outlander 2.5 litre all wheel drive i was about 300 kilo's heavier and my fuel bill was $5.00AU more
so im pretty happy there, we sat on 110klmph most of the way (where i was allowed )
it did not have much problem holding this speed.
BUT the foot wells got so dam hot that the brake pedal (which has no rubber on it) was so hot it was uncomfortable through my shoes
if i turn the heater on the pump does run but does not kool.
and the heater will make it alot hotter
it is runnig on 90 degrees
all seem well except for the the heat at the feet
any thoughts on my predicament
thanks rod

Air con running but not cooling is probably a system in need of regassing.
Unfortunately, the gas used originally was R-12 (I think) and is a
'greenhouse' gas, so is now not easy to obtain. I believe you can use
more modern refrigerant, but this requires the system to be stripped
and rebuilt.

Hot footwells. Could be missing bulkhead insulation (thick, hard rubber
and felt) in the engine bay?

Hello Rod

The firewall insulation was both inside and outside, as Chris says, and I think would be dual purpose - Noise and Heat but the major benefit would be with heat!.

I am also getting heat up trough the gearstick and handbrake as thier boots are gone.

The gearstick cavity also had a foam filler and plastic membrane to exclude hot air and fumes from the cabin.

The handbrake boot was also supplimented with a membrane and I also remember there being a foam pad when I first removed my centre consol although its not there now.

Was thinking of lagging the extractors

Lagging the manifolds/extractors and downpipes will reduce heat transmission and attenuate exhaust noise in the engine bay.

You also get a power benifit resulting from the hot gasses (less dense) moving away from the combustion chambers faster, with a positive effect on induction too.

What will not happen is reduction of heat transfer into the cabin as the firewall lagging will be the major contributor.

Also Efi systems run hotter underbonnet temperatures than carb systems because of all the resident extra metal radiating heat.

Reference - the AirCon - I had the same three years ago - tremendous hot output from a fully gassed system and NO cooling at all.

Turned out to be a faulty electrical contact around the fuse box which shut off part of the system but allowed the (very) hot stuff from the matrix thro the vents with no cooling from the A/C. It was a wierd fault and took some time to figure out - in the meantime - HOT was an understatement.

If you are getting superhot air from the vents and for what ever reason the A/C is not compressing/refrigerating that could be a cause of extra heat.

You can find a pdf of the official CCOT A/C manual on my website (1.8mb)

My SD1 was converted to run on R134a in January 04 before I owned it. It required new fittings and new hoses and that was all. I have since had to have it regassed, fitted a new filter drier and it works fine. The total for conversion was NZ$540 and regassing NZ$300 to give you an idea of price. Was well worth it for me
