Want to check/set the timing on my Vitesse using a strobe light, but I'm not too sure where the timing pointer is & what it looks like on the EFI engine! Can see the diagnostic port on the passenger side of the engine but not too sure where I'm supposed to be looking for the timing pointer! Can anybody help?

It's around the other side Smile It's still on the front pulley but there should be a pressed steel pointer bolted to the block (I think).

Aah, so that's what that is! Wot does it take the timing measurements from? The only thing I can see on the pulley is a little round knob, there's no scale for advance & retard like on other cars...

The pully is filthy dirty, needs cleaning, scrape the dirt out of the engravings and fill them with white tyre wax. Dont knock the button off, its part of the diagnostic circuits - probably never used.

Indeed, the markings are very hard to see, I filled in the 0 and 10 degree lines with tippex so I could see what was going on. You'll have to put the car in gear and rock it to turn the engine around to where you want it, unfortunately.

Dunno what you'd do then! Perhaps a deep reach socket might get in the front pulley? I don't even know what's in there (can't reach it), but I assume it's a single large bolt...

Or perhaps remove all the plugs and pull it round on the fan belt. A bit labourious though...

Quick question, which cylinder is number 1 cylinder? Am not sure if it's the one behind the alternator or behind the power steering pump! Don't wanna time my engine off the wrong cylinder lol!!!

According to my notes it's by the power steering pump - left bank = odd numbers as you're sitting in the car.
