Driving home from work the other night, I heard a metallic "tinkling" lasting about a minute, then nothing....

Stopped the car to discover the little curly-shaped tail-pipe had come adrift, leaving the rear most silencer in position.

Immediately I looked at the Rimmers catalogue for a replacement tail box/pipe.

I'd always considered my now adrift tailpipe to be a little small in bore, and unfortunately a full stainless steel Rimmers sports system is out the question at the mo (unless santa brings me one)

I was wondering if the standard Vitesse rear box/tail-pipe will be a direct fit to my exhaust system.

For info, in case you didn't know, she's a 1983 3500 carb automatic, with a three box system, the one where the (main?) box goes off to the side virtually under the driver's seat.

It seems my car has in the past been retro fitted with a tail-pipe from a smaller engined car, a 2000 or 2300 perhaps, because it looked terribly small to me, and having owned 2600s, 3500SEs, Vanden Plas's (?) and Vitesses before I never remember them being this small....

Maybe it was done at a "Kwik-fit" type establishment some years ago, and this smaller bore tail-box was the only remaining SD1 stock they had left at that time.

I can't measure it because it came off from the back of the rear box and is lost

I may approach a local company who makes up exhaust systems and get them to build me a tail-pipe, perhaps losing the rear box altogether, should give me nicer deeper V8 rumble

the 3.5 carb uses a 3 box 3 bolt system as the vitesse uses a 3 box 2 bolt system if you want to fit a vitesse system your have to get it from the y piece back mate and take the that side box out and put a piece of pipe in there and it will sound lovely i done it loads of times, good luck

Make up your own!
I bought two sections of 3.5" pipe from demon tweeks, and welded it up.
It looks a bit home made, but it sounds good, and looks OK from the right angle

3.5"? looks more like 2.5" at maximum
