Can anyone help I am about to remove the door rubbing strips from the doors as I have got a hold of better examples to fit in their place. Could you let me know what is the best way to remove (heat gun possibly) them and also the best way to stick them back on (???????)and what to use to do this. Ramon I would imagine you will have an answer for this but everyone elses help will be much appreciated too. After deciding to keep the car I am trying to fix all the bits that niggled with me........
Many thanks......... |

Stephen, Every time I ever tried to remove the strips they took paint off so maybe they needed to be hotter than I could get them. If the door cards were removed and a fan heater was directed into the door cavities for a long time the door metal might get hot enough to release the sticky's.
On the other hand have a look at this:

Thinking about it, I reckon if you went to a body shop and asked the same question, they would have the answer.
As to how well they are stuck, that might depend on whether they are original fitment. Both my efforts were trying to remove originals except on one door which came off real easy but it had different adhesive patches, so the door had probably been repaired and rubbing strip refitted since new. _________________ Ramon

Yes that could be it... they seemed to be on with some dodgy looking double sided tape. _________________ Owner of 3 Rovers and 1 MG.

The last time my restorer removed the Vitesse side rubbers it was 8 years after HE stuck them on after its FIRST restoration and he told me that they came of fairly easily. He uses (as I do) a black double side badge tape that comes 1" wide on rolls with a green protective film.
When I has to clean up the rear faces of the various sets I took off, the original sticky was VERY difficult to remove.
The only practical way was to roll it off with thumb pressure. I did resort to scrapers and sharp blades but they just get stuck up and become part of the problem. It was tough on thumbs but illustrated just how good the adhesive was.
Removing the badge tape described above is a lot easier, but rolling it off with the thumb works best. _________________ Ramon
