The electric mirrors in my Vandenplas have stop working. I tried the switch numberous times switching back and forth between mirrors and using the pitch knob but nothing is happening.Any suggestions?
Am i just better to replace the switch for a new one? |

As a preliminary action you could just try flooding the switch with WD40, but because the switch rarely fails, also check all the wiring and connectors between the input voltage feed and the switch and each mirror.
These connectors are some of the most inaccessible on the car so its a bitch to get behind the switch, and then removing each mirror to winkle out the two connectors.
I dont know quite how it works but there seems to be some interaction between the two mirrors in that when one of them is operated the other one "Clicks" and vice versa, but it definitely means that the connectors in the doors need to be checked.
youll find some tips here

The 'click' heard in both mirrors when you operate the joystick
vertically is the solenoid clutch in the mirror mechanism. The
electric mirror mechanism is pretty clever in that it does horizontal
and vertical movement using just one motor - a clutch operated
by a solenoid gears the motor to drive horizontal or vertical. The
click is heard in both mirrors as the passenger/driver side mirror
control switch in a single pole on the motor feed. |

Austin-Rover electrics!! Damn this will not be good. The electric loom in my car looks like loose spagetti noodles.

Quick thread hijack if I may...
When I adjust my electric mirrors the clock sometimes resets itself. Has anyone heard of this before? just wondered if anyone had any advice before I go searching for an answer - my first port of call is to check the earths.
Cheers

Carl, The electric door mirror switch and the trip computer (so probably also the clock when trip computer is not fitted) are on the same fuse "B3" so with a common voltage feed they may also share an earth circuit.
Check both and check for a loose fuse also.
Another possibility is that the switch may be causing a short that resets the clock

| My friends audi had more electrical problems than there propably is accessories in my SD1. He just had to give up on audi because there propably wasnt a week when the lights didnt suddenly stop working or the dash went all dark for no real reason at all. It never left him on the road but cops once gave him ticket because he drove in the middle of the night back home with only foglights because the audi electricity failed again and the long and short beams stopped working. That was his last nail into the coffin and he bought another car.
Now he has mercedes 300CE from 1990. Its a lot better electrically than audi. It only has few quirks that are very minor. Mechanically its a nightmare... headgasket has gone again and the car is burning water and oil. Differential broke not too long ago... And some other part that made all the water fly around the engine bay. _________________ Owner of 3 Rovers and 1 MG.

The passenger side mirror on my Vitesse had stopped working, had to swap the mirror over when I replaced the door, when I tried to wiggle the connector out(damned hard to do too!!), lo & behold, one of the wires had snapped inside the connector! Looked like it had been like that for some time too, had to bypass the connector block with spade connectors & now it works OK |
