Out of curiosity, has anyone ever determined whether the V8 viscous coupling was the same as fit to some other vehicle? In other words, is there an interchange to some other car? Or was this a "special" piecebuilt for Rover only? Knowing interchanges to other makes of cars is especially valuable here in the US.

Glenn,

Some BMW cars have units with the same waterpump fixing as UK Rover SD1 Efi cars. Whether that applies to Exports I dont know.

Either way, it would probably involve changing fan blades as explained here:

Thank you for your reply. However, can you be more specific. What years and model(s) of BMW are you talking about? Would the BMW fan be
used also?

Glenn, sorry I never had to do it, but it does involve changing the fan blades and possibly drilling some new holes in the fan mounting plate.

However, that is a purely engineering task simply needing careful attention to pitch diameter to prevent imbalance.

The real key is finding the viscous unit with the correct fixing to the w/pump.

The chap who know more about this is Dave Plowman, who is not usually found here, but is always around on:
