Well. I finally got the light bases completed.. NO shitting yourself now there. IMO the led lights look better than the standard ones. Even the lights are standard but with just led modules inside.

Ammount of leds used: 1314!!! That is, 806 Red ones, 352 yellow ones and 156 white ones. Total ammount of TIN used for soldering A LOT!! All of the leds are super bright except for white ones which are ultra bright. Total ammount of work hours that gone into these... too much... which is about umm... 50 hours. The damn soldering took long time.

My camera doesnt make them justice. IRL you can really see the difference. The led lights have this sparkling in them where the normal ones are just dull.

The wiring side hasnt been sorted yet. I will make that after this damn time consuming christmas is over.

Here is standard one for comparing.

While I was at it... I made led sunroof button so the heat of filament bulb wont eat the insides.

Sure do. I first gotta refurbish the clear parts so I can put them together then make wires and install on the car.

It wouldnt take 50hours for me to make these anymore now that i know what im making and what needs to be done. It would still be a lot of work and not cheap. The leds cost a lot... like 130£!!!

OKAAAY... little test with the brake lights and reverse light. My father asked me when i was building the light this "are you going to just make parking, brake and rear fogs with the leds?... im sure the leds wont have enough power to be indicators or reverse lights" It suprised me how much these little leds got light power.

Makes the 21watt filament bulb look bad.

Reverse with monitors and roof lights on.

Now in the dark. Without any other light source than that.

And the brake lights. I didnt have connectors to connect them together so you will have to imagine how its like with both of them on at once to get my brake lights Smile

Park lights will be the 2 dips at 50% power... then rear fogs will make it 100% power for the park lights. You might of already guessed that.

MORE TO COME...

They look sweet! So could you be persuaded to make more of them for the home market? Wink

Im going to have to go to army 7th of january 2008 so not much time for me to make anything... all my weekend holidays will be gone in building the SD1. But just about anybody with a soldering iron and some sort of a cutting machine can make these.

The led modules part is easy to make but time consuming, depending if you do it the same way as I did every led had its own resistor so if one led blows out it wont generate a chain reaction. Thats what made it time consuming.

Then theres the cutting of the bases.. no space science just hack all out what interferes led modules. Heres some plan pics that might help.

The difficult part is to open your lights in one piece. No other way to surely open them in one piece than carving out the places from old light bottoms where the gluings are. If your lucky like me and the old glues have turned pretty much into dust then its just few little twists and pulls and the gluings crack and the covers just pull off Smile

Is there an easier way to do it without going to the trouble of removing the light lenses? What about making the bulb holes in the back a little larger & plastic welding the LED's onto that? & also maybe using less LED's?
I think I might have the odd spare light cluster in my shed somplace, might have a go at it!

You can use a lot less leds than I did. Im pretty sure that you cant get same kind of light pattern (as i do) without opening the light. As you see the light base I took pictures of what needs to be cut has a "led bulb" installed to the parking light. The set of 2 ready made ones cost like 3£ so I bought one set to see how it looks like. It looks just like the original when lit... just a little dimmer.

Okay.. I finally got the electrics done for the taillights. Its not been long has it? Very Happy

Heres how the rear foglights are supposed to look like.

and brakes.

If I have time and inspiration tomorrow Im going to test them in car so I can see stock and led side by side. I WILL take pics IF I get that far Smile

As always things tend to go wrong... I forgot to take my phone with me so I took only one picture with my dads phone... that phone totally sucks from its camera side so I decided I wont waste my time taking photos with crappy camera where you cant see anything else but blur.

The taillights themselves work pretty well. The brake lights are brighter than the stock ones and are also a lot wider from the light area so are a lot more recognizable... reverse lightning changed a lot... the old ones are just plain ugly brown and underpowered where the led lightning is just sicke bright and pure white. Only downside is that the park lights are a lot too bright and I have to figure something out to reduce their power.

Heres the awful picture for you all to laugh at.
