First, I am so glad I found this forum. Being a SD1 over in the USA is a somewhat challenging experience!

The previous owner put synthetic ATF in right before I bought it, and about a week later it popped out of first gear with a loud bang.

First gear will engage, and the linkage feels normal, but with any load on the car it refused to hold first gear.

I switched the transmission oil to GM Synchromesh, which is was recommended by the TR8 clubs here in the US. This is equivalent to an SAE 80W gear oil.

Is it possible that flushing the box will correct this issue, or do you think the internal forks or gears are damaged to a point where a new box will be required.

Help!

Hello Skip!

Dont panic these boxes are pretty bullet proof, so first check the remote mounting bushes or the selection shaft linkage therein. If they are loose its possible you are simply not properly engaging first gear.

Regarding what oil to use, there are many answers depending upon who is offering opinions.

I swear by 0W40 Mobil 1 and if you search the forum there are some threads agreeing.

Regarding choice of oil and flushing have a look here

its radical but it works for me and quite a few others that tried it.

If all the above fails - THEN suspect the gearbox.

Thank you for the info - that is encouraging.

Do I need to drop the box to inspect those bushings and linkage or can I inspect ad repair through top access via the shift boot and console?

Thanks!

You may shed some light on the looseness of the remote control housing from above but I could only fix mine from below. It was a long time ago, I did not drop the box, but as I recall, I slipped part of the exhaust off, other wise access is difficult.

The remote control assy is shown on the link page mentioned earlier.
