Hi, hope this isn't the wrong place to ask this question, but I'm wondering what body and mechanical parts can be taken from a series 1 SD1 to a series 2? I've spotted a series 1 V8 S that has a 5 speed manual. The car is complete so it might be worth buying for panels as well if they can be changed.

Am i right in thinking that the liftback is different? What about doors and bonnet etc?

Many thanks in advance,

Ray

you are kidding right? Don't even think about strippingthe V8-S if it's in good condition! They are quite rare! Better to keep the V8-S & restore it.
Why would you want to do this inthe first place? either buy a series 1 or a series 2, don't bother mucking about swapping bits between the two.

lol, woops that got a reaction didn't it! Embarassed

Thanks for the advice, I'm completely new to SD1's so had no idea it was a rare vehicle.... turns out it's been sold so I've missed out. it was deregistered which means it can't be used on NZ roads without going through an expensive process - but the car went for NZD$1000 which is probably around 300 pounds I think.

Anyhoo, back to the topic - if I were to find an older series 1, plain vanilla model, nothing special , what panel parts would transfer to a series 2?

thanks.

Obviously ensuring yourself it is a genuine factory V8-S and not just a re-badged series 1 3500....

I'm sure some V8-S experts on here (of which I am not....) will let you know what to look for to be sure it's the genuine article.

But if it's in such good condition, buy it and store it anyway, whether genuine V8-S or not, good series 1s are a joy to behold and must surely becoming rarer by the day....

hello mate
two of the panels you mentioned are not intechangeable between series one and two cars. they will fit, but they are not the same.

1) the bonnet on the s1 has two holes cut out for the windscreen washer jets. the s2 has the jet in the scuttle panel

2) the tailgate/boot/liftback, whatever you want to call it, the s1 has a smaller glass than the s2. they made it bigger in 82 in response to customers moaning that they'd just reversed over their family because they couldn't see out the back window!

also the rear panel is different on both models, on the series 1 the rear panel has two large holes at either siode for fitting the series 1 style bumpers, the series 2 doesn't have those holes

Series 2 bonnets also have headlight eyebrow holes, maybe be
different front edge for the small series 2 grille.

Rear lamp panel is different - series 2 has extra hold and raised section
in the middle for the full-width badge-bar.

S1 bonnet doesnt seem to have any difference in my eye other than the washer jet holes and then the lack of light chrome strip holes.

That's interesting to note, considering good S1 bonnets are nigh on
impossible to find - and Rimmers have a couple of hundred S2 bonnets!

easy enough to fill the eyebrow holes, but you'd have to be careful drilling the washer jet holes! for drill slippage as well as making sure they were level!

Yep... or just make it simpler and use the S2 washer jet Smile

and by the time you've drilled a hole in the scuttle panel and poked your washer tubing up the inside of the wing and across to the jet, it's not so simple any more!!
well, nothing's easy is it?

Isn't the hole already there - common scuttle panel for LHD and RHD,
i.e. wiper arms poking through different holes? Two rubber bungs on
series 1 cars, only one on series 2 with the washer jet in the other
spare hole?
