Chris,
From your description it sounds like dirty or corroded wiring/connectors.

First check the circuit diagram on page 32 of the wiring digrams in your rover workshop manual.

All the components except the dashboard switch are in the boot, RH wing cavity, pull all the carpets on that side and below.

With ign on check the two relays are seated and working in response to the control switch. You should be able to hear them. If not the control switch or the wiring to the relays is faulty.

If you can hear them then it could be dirty relay sockets or relay contacts - Try swapping the relays or getting a couple of spares to try, they are cheap as chips at spares day, there is also a fuse nearby.

Check the 12 volt feed (thick brown wire) to the relay panel is live all the time.

Check the main connector to the motor is not loose or corroded.

There are local earths from the relay panel that need to be checked for corrosion.

Finally the motor. Disconnect the connector an apply 12 volts directly to the red and green wires and then reverse them to see the motor goes both ways. No rotation means motor kaput or jammed gearbox.

If it does but everthing is tired and lazy then its a friction problem in the gearbox, worm drives or the sunroof cradle.

If its is that then come back for more info.
