I went to see the V8-S yesterday.

It is in very good condition- the only rust to be found is a little surface rust-at the bottom of the doors, and the inner wheelarch lip. There is no rot at all. Even the boot floor is solid, as are the strut tops etc.

Splendid news!

The seats are grubby, but the carpet is quite good. It will need a headlining, though.

If the headlining board is OK, then you'll need a weekend of dry
weather, some new material (Woolies) and some spray adhesive.
It's not a difficult job, but fiddly and time consuming.

The worst part of the car is the damage to the roof caused by the lifing strap- The gutters are bent in and the door seal flanges bent out. However, the roofline has not been affected, and the gutter and flanged look as though they will straighten fairly easily.

The stainless steel gutter finishers are available NOS from Rimmers, as
are new door seals.

Also, the man at the yard said that he knew of another 3.5 SD1, which he believed was also a V8-S, not far from Nottingham. Apparantly, it is in a front garden and has a tree growing through it.

There must be thousands of now classic cars rusting away in peoples
front gardens. There is a mk1 Ford Crapi a couple of streets from me,
it's stood there for at least 8 years and is a mess - hardly any front
wing left!

Tim- the headlining has holes in it- looks like mice. The board looks fine, though.

Very Happy

Anyone know how much it might cost to get a locksmith to make a set of keys? Or if someone can make them using the lock numbers? I know some car clubs will make them using the VIN number and factory records (assuming you still have the original locks). A set of new lock is expensive (£150+).

What a find!, nice one. Cool

Re the keys, I'd go for a new lockset if you possibly can, save's a lot of hassle. I had a locksmith cut a new key for a P6 ignition barrel a while ago. Wasn't cheap and it never worked quite the same after that.

Collected it Yesterday!

The journey up was uneventful- although boring at 55-60. We got to the scrap yeard, and reversed along the long dirt track. They lifted the car on with the crane- no more damage was done. While the car was flying, I had a look underneath- there is some rust and cracked underseal, but no rot.

With the car tied down onto the trailer, we set off down the M1. All was going fine (The 1.8 Audi did stuggle on the long hills, though) until we got to the junction with the A14 (J19 possibly).

Bang. The offside trailer tyre blew out. Luckily, my Dad was driving, and caught the sideways trailer before it scaused an accident. We coasted to a stop on the hard shoulder, just past the junction. Cue a 1 1/4 hour wiat for the RAC- we had a spare, but no trolley jack to change the wheel.

I have never seen a tyre quite as shredded as that one. The whole trad was miossing, and there were 6 or 8 splits all the way down the sidewall. When the tread came off, it shattered the plastic mudguard, ripped off one of the mountings, and bent another through 35 degrees- this is a peice of 1" by 1/4" steel. I was only just able to bend it straight enough to put the spare tyre on.

Eventually, we got back home, and reversed the Rover into the barn- exept on the lump groung, the trailer's brakes kept locking up, so we had to disconnect them.

The engine went to a restoration college in Blackpool- I am going to tyr to find out exactly where it went. We are going to offer my Dad's Capri as a project for them.

James

"Interesting" is one way of putting it. It was scary for about 3 seconds:shock:, concerning for the following 30:?, and boring for the next hour:(.

I forgot to take my camera with me yesterday:oops:- the spectacle of a flying rover is one I would have liked to share.

I will post some photos at the weekend of the car in it's new home, and of the shredded tyre.

My Dad said that it was amazingly solid- he hasn't seen one that good in ages.
