hi to you all,im new to your forum,so please make allowances,im also not very computerminded.ive got a 1985 sd1 vdp, which im trying to make better than it is.ive been cleaning up engine/bay.took leads off.distributor, and cant remember how to replace, leads still connected to plugs.how is distributor numbered?
2,im thinking of fitting new timing chain/cogs,and oil seals.would i be correct in thinking that if i lock the crank and cam shafts at n0.1 tdcp, that i can carry out this task, and that timing wont be disturbed?be gratefull for any infor.taffy

Plug lead order is a bit complicated...

Cylinders are numbered

1 - 2
3 - 4
5 - 6
7 - 8

As you're sitting in the driver's seat, odd numbers on the left bank, even on the right.

Order on the dissy cap is: 1, 2, 7, 5, 6, 3, 4, 8

The two leads on the dissy closest to the front of the car are 8 & 4 (8 on the left as you're sitting in the car). You'll see they're arranged with two leads facing front, two rear, two left, two right.

It's hard to explain without a picture... Doubled check the firing order in the haynes manual, but I don't think it shows the order on the dissy cap...
