I'm rebuilding mine, new pistons and seals etc, but how the hell do you fit the metal retainer rings ? I just cannot get the beasties to fit without damaging the metal ring. There must be a way to press these in without damaging them !! the Rover tech manual just states fit the ring with the seal inside. doh !

the seal kit from Rimmers seems a tad overside. The old retainer came out and was crap, it looks indentical to the new 1s and the same size by eye. Yet the old 1 will push back into the bore with a tap from the hammer yet the new 1s deform and will not go in without fighting. So RB 7096 is 2 rubber seals, then 1 metal retainer ring. Rimmers part no is AEU1547.

any ideas cos this is doing my head in.

Simon, had a sniff of the same problem when I did mine a couple of years back.

I measured the new retaining rings (Lockheed purchased 8 years ago but not from Rimmers) and bores with calipers and they were an exact interferance fit, but the problem was they had an "edge".

After messing one up I then took each ring and chamfered the outer leading edge with fine wet and dry paper (600 grade) polishing off the interfering edge whilst rotating it gently around my fingers.

I also made sure that there was no crud around the cylinder bores using the same grade paper.

After that they all went in OK but it had me guessing for a while.

I made up a hardwood tool shaped like large flat screwdriver blade to apply downward pressure a bit at a time to get the rings to seat. I used brake fluid as lube.

I'm pretty sure I just used an appropriately sized socket and a small hammer to tap them in square. I had the seal kit from Rimmers.

chaps

many thanks for the replies.

I eventually managed by placing the metal retaining ring in my hand, gently folding the leading edge ever so slightly using pointy nosed pliers and this gave the ring a start to fit into the bore. I put my block of wood, 2in wide by 1/5 thick over the top of the ring and tapped it home with a small hammer using light taps. Jobs a goodun.

they list
caliper seal kit AEU1547 @ £3.74 + vat
pistons (606683) @ 3.10 + vat

and next day delivery at a very reasonable charge.

same part nos as Rimmers but 1/3 of the price.

So it was rude of me not to buy all new pistons and seals !!!

hope this helps
