Spats are nasty things. They hide rotting bodywork - and the front of
the rear arch is a particularly good SD1 rot point.
They were only on early Vitesses with the side decals (or black sills, not the
later body-colour sills). I think they were intended to protect the leading
edge of the rear arch from stone-chips, but pointless doing that if the
arch underneath is rotting away unseen! |

Yeah I was told they tended to trap water and cause that rot.
Shame really, because they look cool. |

I think you'll find the spats are fitted to all Vitesse' mine have been colour coded silver (get stone chips from the front wheels though)
The stripes were fitted only to early cars 82/83 and were a non cost deletion, my late car has been fitted with them, they look good but will debate whether to refit them when I get the car repainted - eventually _________________ Regards

I'm pretty sure only early Vitesses had the spats. Early brochures show
a monza red Vitesse with decals and the spats, along with black sills and
the base of the rear quarter below the rear bumper.
By a 1984 catalogue, it's a moonraker Vitesse without decals or spats,
but now has the deep-chin front spoiler, body colour sills and side-rubbing
strips. 1985 has a silver Vitesse, again no spats.
Spats are also not listed as options in price lists.
But the main thing is to have a car you like and enjoy. If you like spats,
fit 'em |

Hi,
I think that the spats were only fitted to the early cars with the decals. When they went to rubbing strips the spats were dropped.

Precisely why I intend to put them on mine when I fit the alloys - to cover up the inevitably poor spray job that will go there now the all the rust there has been eliminated!
If I fit them with silicone sealer (rather than the crappy foam tape they originally had) I would have thought that no moisture can get in to make the arches rust again. |
