Dear SD1 forum!

I have just bought a 1971 Range Rover (A prefix) with an absolute marvelous SD1 V8 engine, but the starter motor is a bit tricky. I'm using a hammer now, every third start.
The car is great, but i'm going to restore it further to the Range Rover 40th anniversary in two years time.
Anyway, is there anyone that could recommend a new starter motor for this engine?
Also, the number is 439289 (9.35:ICR), at least what I can see - Do anyone have any info on this engine? Age?

Many many thanks in advance!
Best regards from Norway,
Robert Soevik

Don't buy new, save the money for something else. It is only the solenoid on top of the starter that is sticking. Just take this off, strip it down and clean it all up. Most likely it is just a small amount of corrosion on the shaft or bore.

Good luck

Smiffy.

Thank you Smiffy,

I will certainly look into that. By the way, due to darkness I didn't see the "10A" before the number stated above, so I recon the engine is built between 76-87.
Again thank you, will report back on how it's going!

Robert

if the engine has come out of an sd1, it has been built between 1976 and 1986.
wonder why it hasn't got a range rover v8 in it?

Looking at some SD1 build records and engine numbers, an engine with a block number of 10A39289 would have been installed in an SD1 built in late 1979 or early 1980. It's difficult to say for sure as ascending block numbers are not necessarily installed in ascending VINs Exclamation

The block would originally have been in a 3500 or V8-S model with a manual gearbox. 10A = 9.35:1 compression, manual.

Thank you guys.

I got a note from Gaydon saying that it was installed in a SD1 in July/Aug 1980.

Again thanks,

Robert
