Hi, Does anyone know whether I have any options for replacing the Lucas A133 alternator on my SD1? My unit is still working, but has bearing noise. The local shops that can provide one want to charge like a wounded bull ($400) - and a couple of quotes for the repair option are nearly as expensive. Did auto sparkies go over to brain surgeon rates sometime in the last few yeatrs?

I thought that maybe there was a more moderately priced alternative out there somewhere - maybe Bosch?
Any advice greatfully received.
Regards,
Paulcnb

Thanks for that advice V8man, I reckon I should be able to find one here in Aus. The difficulty is knowing what is interchangeable with the SD1 - not knowing where to start makes it difficult sometimes. So your advice about the 1990 Rangie is most welcome.

the jaguar xjs and land rover 2.5 diesel also used the a133, and probably loads of other cars. just be careful that they are the same output (75 amp for the rover v8?) and that the terminals are the same.

Hi,
I could not find a good used alternator so I had an auto elec install new bearings in my unit. Final cost was $110 Australian. The alternator is now working fine. Unfortunately another electrical gremlin has made itself known and the car will not start. Ramon has given me some good advice to help identify the problem. I will give it my best shot tomorrow. SD1s can be a bit tiresome at times.
