Tired of feeble gas struts on the car's bonnet I ordered a poverty spec bonnet stay from Rimmers whilst ordering a few other bits I needed. This is what you get:

I don't know if I'm being thicker than a whale omlette, but I can't see where the rod is supposed to connect to the bodywork. Am I missing an all-important bracket?

I retrofitted bonnet gas struts to my 1985 Efi VDP and had to fit the securing brackets too.

Is it possible that all the very late cars produced in 1986 had gas struts.

My late TP vitesse May 86 built, reg 87 has gas bonnet struts that have tried (and are tired) to compress me many a time. Rimmer have gas ones listed at £24 GST108 - should invest in them maybe.

Yes, Rimmer's price is each. They're not that expensive I suppose, but ~£50 would buy a pair of springs/shocks. The flacid bonnet is really only a convinience issue to me.

I thought about getting an pair from ebay (apparently quite new). They were for sale with a pair of front indicators for £14.99 and attracted no bids. I wasn't interested in the indicators so enquired about just the struts after the auction had finished "sure, £20 + post" says he, "lol" says I, and explain about the recently finished auction and offered £10. I recieved no reply!

Exclamation I'm amazed VDP EFi cars didn't have the gas struts. I'm certain
all Vitesses had them, from introduction in 1982 - the review of
ROE977Y showed them. Also fairly sure NADA cars had the gas struts
(maybe V8-S also?) from 1979/80. I assumed all VDP cars had them
too.

And would you believe when I picked up a couple of gas struts with brackets attached at a billing spares day, i managed to select two with the same handed brackets and then had to bend one of them to the other hand to make the job work.

I'm looking for an early foto of the bonnet stay fixing on my vdp.

I haven't worked out if there's actually logic for this.

My Y-reg 2000 had gas struts, and that was decidedly poverty spec. My 1987 2300 has a bonnet stay. I assumed it was just part of the decontenting that they performed on later models. My early S2 also had driver's glovebox lock and front door open lights that were deleted from the late one, for example.

I am surprised that an EFi would not have them though. I guess late on in life Rover were just using up stock and a bodyshell for a 2300 might have ended up being built up as a VdP?
