pads were $106 - not sure where the garage got them from, suspect Repco since they're just down the road from the garage I use.

okay... please tell me, am i the only one that wonders what went so horribly wrong? Compare my SD1, to the rover next to it. The new rover isnt a bad looking car, but its not beautiful like the SD1 is.

Well,I'd like to say they are just products of their time....but that wouldn't be right....The SD1 was a mid Eighties car that was ahead of its time when brought out in the Seventies,The 800 on the other hand was a car hoping to have some of the older values whilst being a 80s car,these ideas weren't really compatable in the newer car...I get the feeling they tried to please too many people in one go.

the mark two 800 series was designed to hark back to the rover p5.
wood, leather, and a radiator grill were a must in the design, which is why it looks like that.
the mark one 800 series was designed in it's own right, which is why (in fastback form at least) it bears more than a passing resemblance to the sd1.
also i dare say that pedestrian safety was influencing car design by the late 80s early 90s, so the mark two 800 isn't as angular as its predecessors.
an sd1 hitting a pedestrian at 30mph would probably cut them in half with that lovely pointed nose!

You forgot soft... You happen to crash somewhere and the car crumbles into a raisin. Made from some 0.4mm thick tin foil.

Series 1 800s are getting very stylish, and are now very rare (probably
rarer than SD1s). The original 827 Vitesse is particularly nice, those
'reverse spoke' alloys are beautiful. Wish someone would find the original
TV advert and put it on YouTube - the one with the two Germans
exclaiming "britischer architekt".

it gets worse though... the shapeless bubbles you speak of, describes the latest bunch of rovers, and most other cars designed lately. its horrible. i wish they would just go back to designing cars like they did in the 70s/80s.

lol, those really confused me untill i wiki'd it. i was like, wtf, this doesnt look like an SD1... too new too.... oh wait, FWD.. with a honda engine. ugh, two words i hate.

Blimey, green doesn't suit it! Silver is a better colour for the 800. It doesn't
quite have the presence of the SD1, or the brutal power of the V8. But the
Honda V6 is sweet and the car is still sharply styled.

i had a vitesse a few years back which was originally a company car for a manager of a big bank in london. when it was replaced by an 827 vitesse, he bought the sd1 and kept it for 15 years.
anyway, to cut a long story short, when he got the 827 he wrote a letter to one of the big car mags saying how much he preferred his old sd1. the only thing the 827 had on the v8 was the top end and fuel consumption.
still have the letter somewhere actually, makes interesting reading

I miss my baby!

Sold it 6 months ago... and have regretted it since. One thing that keeps me from going over to the guy i sold it to and buying it back though, is that i know its in the best hands possible.

i sold it to a local guy, who is the editor for the local rover club. The chap owns a good atleast 6-7 SD1s (in various states of running) including a couple of carb'd VDPs (including a manual), and some old gen 1s.

Just thought i should update this.... and just to say, this isnt the last time you'll see me on here with an SD1. Wink
