|
|
Hi - just wondering if anyone can point to a place where I can find a list of LT77 gearbox identification numbers. I've looked in this forum and wasn't able to find one, but that could just be me
Reason I ask is because I have bought a gearbox on the assumption that it is a Vitesse model, but I just want to be able to verify that.
Thanks in advance. |

Not sure there is a definitive list of LT77 codes on the web anywhere.
There is a reasonable list in an old SD1 Club magazine, Vitesse
LT77 is listed with a 28A prefix. Heresay suggests 'D' or later suffix
was fitted to Vitesses also, i.e. 28A00001D. These boxes having needle
roller bearings on the mainshaft (instead of bronze bushes), a nut to
hold fifth gear to the layshaft (instead of a circlip) and an oil catcher
to improve lubrication of the input and front layshaft bearings.
The 'D' improvements were incorporated into later suffix LT77 boxes,
which continued after SD1 production ceased in Land/Range Rovers,
Sherpa vans and probably Marcos/TVR/Morgan cars (though they may
have been using the T5 box by then). The box in my Vitesse
has a 'H' suffix which makes it the last LT77 variant, this supposedly
has improved synchromesh. This must have been a replacement at
some point as it post dates SD1 manufacture. After the 'H' suffix LT77S
box, the R380 replaced it, which itself is an LT77 development, and
can be recognised by the reverse gate being behind 5th, instead of
dog-leg from 1st. |

Hmm, the SD1 LT77 box usage lists a 23A and 26A prefix, but no
25A. If it is 25A, it could be the box came from a Land/Range
Rover (if it fitted to an SD1, I think bits need some swapping from
the Land/Range Rover application). |

i too have been looking at gearbox numbers.I own a vitesse on an 85 and was looking for the 28A 'd' suffix number on the box. After bead blasting the casing today i discovered that for the last 13 years minimum the car has had a 2300 box.The number i found was 17A19256'b'.Im gutted as i now have too find the correct box for my vitesse.Moral is dont assume the box fitted is original or correct! jj

that would be horribly depressing seeing that number coming out instead of the one you wanted! Now I'm worried again - the box I've bought was being used behind a mazda s4 rx7 motor - so a special bell housing was being used.
think I might get the guy to send a pic of the number... |

13 years! I think that proves it's a good LT77 box! If the
box is still good, I'd be very wary of swapping it out for an unknown
history Vitesse 28A box.
I wouldn't be too surprised if Vitesses left the factory with incorrect
LT77 boxes, there are certainly instances of VIN mismatches. Unfortunately,
I don't think logs were kept of gearbox numbers (like there is with
engine numbers) by the club. |

interesting point chris!a conversation with the mate i bought it off suggests there were probs with the original 28a 'd' box.i reckon A garage fitted what they could get there hands on.I still want to put a 28a 'd' in so will probably mean rebuilding a second hand one ,when i get one.JJ |
