The refrigerant used in the SD1 air-con is the old ozone-depleating gas
(R22 I think). This is 'banned', though there may be some sources for
it.

A better, long term solution is to strip the air-con system and replace
seals, pipes etc., the system can then be regassed with more modern
gas (R134?). I believe some owners have done this, and all will have
to do it at some point in the future to retain air-con - sounds like a
good technical article for the SD1 Club mag Laughing

As Chris says, SD1 A/C can be modified to take R134 instead of R12 refrigerant.

However I spoke with a company called Kempston Radiators last summer about my A/C which has blown its compressor and they said as soon as I get my replacement fitted they could convert my car to R134 by simply changing the two schraeder valves used for input/output of fluid/pressure and add a particular type of lubricant that allows all the existing seals to function with the friendly refrigerant.

The cost of conversion would be 97 quid + vat.

Now lets be clear, we are talking about the later CCOT system and it assumes that the existing main components are AOK.

There was one other point of discussion, they recommend that the dessicant loaded drier is also changed but that is optional and not in the price quoted.

Because S1 cars probably use the VIR system, the same as mentioned above, may not fully apply, but my recommendation is, locate your local Radiator/A/C repair centre and ask their advice, you may be pleasantly surprised.

If you want to read about A/C the CCOT system its described in a pdf (1.8mb) here:

Ah, that's half the fun - the V8 warming the cockles of your heart!

When I was looking for my Vitesse, I wasn't that bothered with air-con
and ended up with my preference - without aircon! Less to go wrong Laughing

I do miss it sometimes though - maybe my next SD1 will have it Cool
