Does anybody have, or know anybody that may have an exhaust gas analyser? Am wanting to tune my vitesse up & would rather do it myself instead of paying somebody, but I can't really afford to buy one either! Would prefer to borrow onefrom somebody local to me(Derby)...

I've seen some kitset analysers in electronics stores and always wondered if they were any good. They come with the software for you to load on your own PC. Interesting project if nothing else

I know Halfords sell one that retails at about 75 quid, but thats a bit beyond my means at the moment, as I'm restoring the Vitesse on a shoestring budget!

eBay was the first place I looked, still quite expensive...

Hi Chris, Sorry about that. I just had a look, that's a shame because a few months ago there were a few secondhand units went for about 20-30 quid. Put a search up on ebay and have them email you. You never know!

Chris I'm assuming TUNING the Vitesse Efi - right?

If you have a definite suspicion that your AFM is not working correctly or has been tampered with internally - then yes, it may be necessary to use a CO analyser to make adjustments to the internal flap spring control ring to modify the mixture control over the whole engine speed range.

However, if the situation is that you just fancy seeing what it is and adjusting it a tad then there are several things to think about instead.

Regarding the AFM - the normal or optimum position for the CO adjusting screw is 2.5 turns out from fully home. of course this will obviously change a bit from car to car, and if the rest of the system is playing up, then adjusting the AFM to compensate for that would be futile anyway - much better to get the rest of the system to be correct first.

I dont know if you always go to the same MOT station, but if you do - go along and see if they will pop their CO analyser on for a few minutes to check the emissions at idle and just make a few adjustment to see if it is within limits. - Dont forget to make a note of the starting position of the adjustment screw.

Even the meanest garage should not charge you more than a couple of drinks for a quick test.

To be sure that your mixture is NOT being upset by other factors/components check out those which may affect mixture such as temp sensors, throt pot, EAV, regulator pressures, fuel pump, O/R valve, filters, breathers, etc and of course do the full plenum air leak test schedule.

With particular reference to the plenum chamber it is far more important than people realise to get and keep the whole thing clean internally - especially the idle and breather galleries and the area around the throttle disc.

Further advice for TUNING is to be sure the ign system is spot on with good/clean/gapped plugs and leads, clean dissy cap/rotor, etc.

I'm sure you know where all the above tests can be found.

Finally, if you are lucky there are a couple of gastesters on ebay, but as you say they do fetch good money.
