|
|
Hi,
Yesterday whilst closing my electric sunroof, the dash switch disintegrated into a pile of small plastic bits, metal tabs and springs....
Rimmer Brothers don't do new 'uns (however list a used one for £14!!)
LDVs were never fitted with electric sunrooves therefore the LDV/Sherpa/Rover dashboard switch parts bin avenue has been closed.
Hence does anyone have a spare?
It's the dash switch for a series 2 car
Thanks all

Hi,
£14.00 doesn't seem too bad for a used sunroof switch, I though it would have been a lot more than that.
These are now getting very hard to come by, you need one, so what's the problem ?

The rear wiper switch (which is available NOS from Rimmers) can be modified into a
sunroof switch
You will need to reuse the switch top (or the legend) and a small copper clip thing from
inside the switch body. This sets the rocker action as momentary/latched (wiper) or
momentary/momentary (sunroof).
It's not difficult to do, though you need to be a bit dexterous as the bits are fiddly. I've a
half written article and pictures - I'll finish this one day for the Club mag or something. |

Hi Jim,
If the part is rare and £14 is considered a good price, that's fair enough.
It's just that when you read Rimmers on-line catalogue, and they list new switches for under £6, then ask £14 for a used one you start to wonder why? (Indian cars didn't have electric sunrooves presumably)
But yes, thinking about it, perhaps they are rare switches if "lekkie sunnies" were perhaps only fitted on the Vanden Plas/Vitesse cars.
Thanks for the advice Jim

Hi Jay,
I would suspect that Rimmers £6.00 switch will be the single action switch, and not the double action switch , like the sunroof one.
I remember at Billing in around 1993/4 one trader had advertised that he would be holding an auction for a sunroof switch at the end of the day, such was the rarity of them in those days.
A lot more cars have been broken since then, but the switch still remains quite rare, and £14.00 for a good one, doesn't seem that much.
Snap it up.

At the most recent spares day (at Rimmers), the wiper (double action rocker) switches were
a FIVER! Big box of them too.
The parts that break on the sunroof switch are common between it and the rear wiper
switch. The rocker switch is not particularly well designed as one of the stress points is
very thin plastic. The illumination bulb doesn't help as it a) heat cycles the whole
assembly and b) stresses the part further as the bulb is held in by sprung clips. I beefed
up the part with araldite and replaced the bulb with an LED (no heat).
I'll try and find time this weekend to write all this up and run it by Ramon. |

Timely,
Mine broke 2 days ago, as it seems does a lot of other folks. I ordered the 14 quid one from Rimmers.

Hi all,
Thanks Chris P, I half took your advice....
I ordered a new Indian rear wash/wipe switch from Rimmers, and when I got it I just carefully swapped the front part of the switches over and hey presto a NEW sunroof switch for just over a fiver, which will hopefully last another 24 years....
The only thing I didn't do was modify the internals to make it stop "clicking" into the down (or open) position, but all this means I now have to touch the button once to open the roof then again when its open to the desired requirement (a "one touch" type thing) but of course like before I still have to hold the button in the up (or close) position till it closes.....
So I've got a brand new switch AND saved £9 as a used one is an eyewatering £14 from Rimmers
Thanks again all, all I need now is some confounded SUN!!! _________________ Lifelong SD1 fan - 1983 Rover 3500 Vanden Plas |
