Anyone know which SD1s had which power steering racks? There seems
to have been three manufacturers - Alman&Alford, Burman and Cam
Gears. But the parts guide doesn't mention which car had which rack,
or whether they were just randomly fitted at production depending on
which was available.

My Vitesse currently has a CamGears rack I believe - this seems the
only one with the pinion housing as part of a single rack casting. The
Rimmers ex-India stock also seems to be CamGears racks.

Does it matter what rack was fitted? I need to change the rack on
the car as the low-pressure fluid connection is broken (a large
chunk of the casting has broken off!).

Anyone driven an SD1 any distance with the power-steering disconnected?
I can't really figure how heavy the steering will be - I know 2000 and 2300
cars lacked power steering, but they had a higher-geared manual rack?

I travelled about 10 miles in my Vitesse, being towed at about 20 MPH, and the steering was fine. Only under 5 mph was a bit of a wrestle, after that, easy!

As far as I Know all the steering racks are interchangebale, I had to replace the gaitors on mine for the MOT and enquired at rimmers which ones I needed, as theres no sure fire way I ordered both sets and returned the ones I dont need, they said that you can fit a recon rack of any kind and they will fit?
