Bit of a odd bod that one, as it has VDP alloys and a Mk2 autoshifter.

That's been in the SD1 Club mag at least once - at a grand more.

Looks too 'messed with' to me - the bits changed as Tim mentions,
it's also got the later bonnet badge and larger type-face rear
badging - both wrong for a 1977 car.

Wow, now having been swayed to the "Series 2 side of the force" had I been in the market to purchase a Series 1 (they are slowly growing on me...) I would have been totally unaware of the points you've raised.

Could there be such a thing as a series 1 1/2? (A-la Mk1 1/2 Triumph Stag, the earlier car with Mk2 bits slowly creaping in)

Jay

There is a S1 1/2, but is was from 1980 IIRC- later door mirrors etc.

The shiny door mirrors replaced the early rubber ones as you say in 1980.
A variant of the later door mirrors were on later series 2 cars - these have
more profiled mountings (and are the ones Rimmers have **** loads of
from India). Later series 1 cars also had illuminated dash switches, also
carried over to series 2 (but with different buttons). I think some seats
were also carried over from late series 1 to series 2.

Series 1 cars are Cool - if anyone has a 1976 "P" reg manual car in caribbean
blue sat in their shed, let me know Wink

What was the launch colour blue featured in the ads and brochures then?, I thought that was Carribean, though it's maybe a bit darker come to think of it.

Caribbean blue was a launch colour for the SD1 in 1976. There were seven colours
available at launch in July 1976 - four solid (richelieu red, brazilia brown, pedelican white,
turmeric yellow) and three metallics (platinum silver, midas gold, caribbean blue).
Caribbean blue was a very short-lived colour, replaced by atlantis blue (I think) in
1978 - I've seen an 'S' plate 2300 (scrapped) and 3500 (actually for sale!) in
Caribbean, also at least one of the press-fleet was Caribbean, LOK109P from memory.

It's well known the state-of-the-art SD1 paint shop at Solihull had horrendous problems
due to the technology used without the manufacturing experience. I know one of James
Taylor's books mentions metallics were not available until 1978, though this date is
more likely sometime in 1977 as my father had a platinum 2600 from new in November
1977.

It's going to be hard enough finding a 'P' plate 3500 in reasonable condition with a manual
gearbox, let alone a caribbean blue one. There may have been only a few months of
customer production caribbean blue cars, so were rare to begin with. I'd hazard a
guess there is just ONE or at most two caribbean blue cars left Shocked

Country Classics have advertised a 1978 3500 Auto in Caribbean blue for a while. Up for £3650.

That's been there for a while (the website is not updated that often), and a look at
the DVLA database suggests this car is 'EXPORT' so I fear it's gone abroad! It's
not been taxed since the end of 2005. I believe this particular car may be the
same one John Giacobi is perched on in this article:

Anyone know of any other caribbean blue SD1s? Makes triton green examples look
common!

That's a shame if it's gone overseas...

There's a couple of nice shots of caribbean blue 3500's in the 'People and the Motor Car (1976)' segment of the 'Rover SD1' video (now on dvd as 'The Best of Rover SD1'). Cool

Who cares if its a import, mine is, mines a ex Isle of man car and according to the logbook was registered in the UK in 1997! Its the car itself that makes it special. I would love a NADA car.
