Love Rovers in general always had SD1s,P5s,P6s and Capris with Rovers in. Just bought a SP Vitesse Auto in red to replace my recently written off 3500 SE

My name is Richard, I am a university student in New Zealand, and early this year, I bought my first car, a 1984 3500SE (registration GR8DOG). A little bit of an upgrade from the Triumph 2500TC belonging to my father that I had driven previously. My SD1's a daily driver, not without its problems (fairly standard SD1 fare: windscreen leaks, poor running when cold and unreliable electrics), but other than that, its a fantastic car and I love it to bits.

welcome Richard, good to see another kiwi here Did you pick yours up form trademe? I seem to recall seeing something like that on there recently with that number plate.

I'm in Te Awamutu, so a bit far away to visit and compare rides....

Thanks Yep, its a Trademe one. A bit of a risky purchase really - hit 'Buy Now' without seeing it or anything and flew down to Wellington to pick it up the next day. But I got it cheap and its not too bad.

I'm new to the whole Rover scene - are there any clubs I should join? I have never seen another SD1 in the Auckland area... Quite sad really. Mine's NZ new, assembled in Nelson, I think. What's yours?

My rover purchase was my first Rover too - prior to that I've had Holdens for fun cars, still got them too although they don't get any attention now I've got the Rover

Haha, its by no means perfect - the aircon and power windows don't work, the interior's a bit tatty and it leaks like a sieve in the slightest amount of rain, but its mechanically sound and a huge amount of fun. I bought it with a rolling restoration in mind anyway, so its just fine. That Vitesse looks awesome! Its a Vitesse that I'm really after, or even just a manual V8 model - I'm no great fan of the 3 speed slush 'box that mine's got. But for the moment, I'm very happy with what I've got.

Filling it up does rather hurt, but I don't do that many miles, so its not as bad as it could be. And when I do go a long way, that fantastic V8 noise makes it all worth it

I'm studying engineering at Massey up in Auckland - doing the maths, taking the Rover is not actually that much more expensive than the bus fare to uni and back.

Not a bad price I think considering it will be everything you need to do the job.

Haha, fair enough. The big problem with mine is the fact that there's more bog than steel in the windscreen surround. That's going to be the first thing that I get fixed once my bank balance recovers... I'll stick with the autobox for a while yet, I think. Might have to get in touch with the guy selling though - he's pretty local, and if he's breaking the car for parts I could do with some bits and bobs...

your car is beautiful, the modifications are subtle enough to complemement the sd1 lines. what make is that kit?

Thanks! The body kit's a bit of a mystery - I asked the previous owner about it - he says it was on the car when he got it and knows nothing about it. Whatever the case, its a pretty decent one - its really well matched to the body colour - better than the factory-fitted chin spoiler, and seems of decent quality. I'm suspicious of its aerodynamic merits, but it definitely makes the car look great

Hi Richard, another kiwi, good to see. Missed seeing you join up, I would have said hi earlier. Plenty SD1's down here in Christchurch, they have quite a following. When you get a little bit of time, check for vacuum leaks, you may find that helps your cold running. Does your car have the SU's or Strombergs? Cheers, Dave.

Mine's got the Stromberg CDs with the infernal FASD for cold starting. I've done a cursory check for vacuum leaks and haven't come across anything - looking at the previous owner's service receipts, its had the problem for a few years...

Even though I don't have one my father had two when I was a kid.
