hey guys.

Yesterday my alt/fan belt started to squeal, so i set about replacing it. Even with the new belt, it randomly squeals at anything over idle.

Its obvious to me its slipping on the alt pulley, and the edges are very shiney where the belt goes.

The mechanic that i got to tighten the belt put a multimeter on the battery and found that the alternator was putting out about 16v when running, and the battery was overcharged. He thinks the regulator is on its way out, over working the alt, which cant keep up with engine speed and thus it causes the belt to slip. The alt also something makes a loud whizzing noise, and the engine seems to labour when the squealing starts.

What i need to know, is, what other rovers can i get the alternator off? can i get one off a new range rover or something? I want a direct bolt and plug in, but its hard to get SD1 stuff here.

Hey there - I had the same problem. Replaced the belt, random squeeling came back which I ignored and then saw the alternator light come on - checked and yep, I'd destroyed my second belt. Put another one on and had it tighter this time but still squeeled every now and then. Took it to mechanic and they tightened it even further, and I've had no worries since Confused

As far as I can tell mine's not overtightened, I think I was being too cautious, plus with that massive torque I think the alternator must have moved a bit when tension came on the belt Very Happy

Out of interest what belt did you use? Repco had to guess based on a landrover.. Ended up with a Gates XL 11A1130

cheers,

Ray

i got mine from supercheap, its a 11A1120.

The mechanic tightened it pretty damn good... so i dont think its that.

Whats your alt putting out at idle (cold start)? Mine is putting out way too much, and sometimes at low idle speed the battery light will come on.

The whine and extra strain put on the engine doesnt sound good to me aye....
