Hi guys. Just purchased an 85 Vanden plas EFI tonight, and it has a couple of quirks (thanks lucas)....

Firstly, the oil pressure guage, and the temperature guage are completely dead. Is there some sort of power feed to them thats easy to get at? i think they might just not be getting power (even though the lights come on in the test sequence) as they dont even so much as twitch.

Thanks

Hello George, normally its the temp and petrol gauges that go missing with a common fault on the local voltage regulator.

In your case its probably the signals missing from temp and oil senders, check the connectors to both and the connector from the egine to the main loom just below the coolant overflow tank.

Alternatively the connectors to the gauges under the binnacle cover.

1985 efi cct diag can be found in the index here:

along with loads of other Efi and general dross.

Nice car, by the way. Rare here, let alone in Kiwiland. Probably worth every penny. Get it sorted, use it, keep it for twenty years, you will definitely not regret it.

I checked what i think is the sensors for them, and the wiring to them is clean and unbroken (as far as i could see).

The guages dont even twitch when the ignition is turned on, which makes me think its power not getting to them?

OK - are the sensors actually working? They should have a finite resistance, not a short circuit nor an open circuit. If they are, does the same resistance readings reach the gauges.

Keep looking for a power outage with your voltmeter, check connectors behind the binnacle cover and the fuse B3 on the fusebox.

Unlikely, but the gauges may be duff. Or the cct board they are connected to may have a broken track. With binnacle cover off, use a mirror to inspect for damage or loose wires.

Are there any other items not working off the same power feed from the fuse? The cct diagram will tell you which components are on the same feed.

Do you have any tips for getting the cover off without breaking it? im real concerned about breaking something, as good condition parts arent easy to come by down here.

ill test the sensors tomorrow with my multimeter and see what i get.

Well it should slide to the passenger side after you have taken one (or was it two) screws out from the passenger side end of the binnacle cover. After that it just lifts off... if the cover is warped then it might take little force to slide it and lift.
