|
|
The battery in my SD1 i believe is the wrong one, since the terminal poles are closest to the headlamp and the terminals dont fit as proper as they should.I need a new battery because the old one is knackered and i want the proper one so its poles are closer to the wheelarch. The number on mine is a "096".Does anyone mind if they could check theirs? and tell me what the proper number is.
I hope this badly drawn diagram might help! . i think it should be the bottom one.
Thanks in advance.

Hi there,
Saw ya problem,
I Use Century N70ZZ Batteries .....which are used in commercial applications here. They are a bit longer that your standard battery but
this gives the engine more cranking power and better for night drivivg.
The + post is closest to the alternator and the negative about 50mm from the inner guard.......LOL make sure you clamp it in tight. BTW they do not hit on the bonnet either.

The 072 will be made by various manufacturers so look on yellow pages for alternate local suppliers.
The 072 type has the capacity to serve the SD1 system with sufficient to spare but please have a look at this before deciding to buy a cheap battery.

I've gotten a few prices and they seem to range between £75 and £100. I'd prefer to pay not more than £50 for a car battery, which I swear was the price a few years ago. Must be the price of lead at the moment... |

I always go to a local motor factor and ask for the best discount they can do. The SD1 072 batteries rarely come out more than 50 quid + vat, so there is clearly a lot of mark-up that you are being asked to fork out, because they wont sell anything at a loss. Talk to them again and see what happens. _________________ Ramon

I'll have to try again then, I'd be happy with those prices. Halfords were a complete joke! I can't imagine this design of battery is used much nowadays? |

Think about it this way!
You simply cannot negotiate a price with Halfords. Who is there to talk to? A nice young lady on the till who is fresh out of school and has been taught to operate the barcode machine. They dont even do mental arithmetic at school these days let alone understand %ages. they are paid minimum wage to push buttons.
In the Motor Factor the staff are on a comission and understand % very well. Mr average motorist pops in to buy a battery that has a 100% markup (say 40 quid) and they make 50% of that in their wages as comission (20 quid). The store takes the rest.
Next, Mr Wise Person pops in and says whats the best you can do for me and the sales person says well I might stretch to 25 % off so he makes only 10 Quid, which is a lot better than turning down 20 quid and you popping next door and asking the same question.
And the store has just sold two batteries at a nice 60 quid profit.
Next Mr garage owner pops in and asks for the same battery - he gets a very healthy 50% discount as a trader and the motorfactors makes a tidy sum there too.
All the while mr average person pays a lot more and thats why you never hear about motor factors going bust. Its the average motorist who does not ask questions who they are in love with. But its turnover that they really, really love.
Be Mr Wise, negotiate, they will still like you lots because you are helping them stay in business. _________________ Ramon

I got one in the end for £65 all in from our local factors with discount. The battery was actually an 069 (I think), apparently it has superseeded the 072? It looks slightly larger and certainly seems up to the job.
Everyone you talk to is complaining about the price of lead. The factors said battery prices had gone up twice in the last few weeks, and were about to go up again.
WRT to dead batteries they say you could give them away a few years ago, now they regularly have people coming in offering to buy them.
At least the car should be ok for ~5 years now |

Price of Lead up 70% this year, Battery prices will continue to rise, Church roofs vulnerable to theft, Guard you lead water pipes with your life or risk flooding.
