I take it you are using the proper mix of water & antifreeze? Sounds like you got an air lock somewhere...

Adam,
If it is not escaping then you have not filled the system yet.

Remove the rad filler bung and the overflow tank pressure cap.

Fill the rad put on the bung, run the engine and raise the rpm to 2000, watch for bubbles and burps in the overflow tank, when it burps fill it up and jam on the cap. Run the engine slowly and switch off.

Repeat and repeat and repeat until you can get no more coolant in.

now this is getting wield it was perfect the other Day got the air lock out the water system run it for a while and all seemed great. have been driving her all weekend and today and thought I'll give her a quick check . well .... opened the rad cap slowly that is let the pressure out and low and behold NO flipping water in the rad expansion tank well not completely empty , i had to put 3 litres of water of mix in it before she was topped up again using the same method as was told before run top up turn of ignition etc etc. i just don't understand where is the water loss going no signs of water loss any where and the temp gauge is spot on well below the normal and i have also placed a temp reading meter in the rad tank and got a reading of 110 F well it was under 110 f so i will say about 105 f please help all help very much appreciated PS; i have clean water and clean oil

One way in which water escapes without being immediately obvious is due to faulty pressure cap allowing water out as you are driving along.

As mentioned in my article on the website there is a way of finding out. Strap a bottle to the chassis rail below the expansion tank and put the overflow pipe into the bottle - read the article for the rest of the wizard wheeze.

the temp gauge is spot on well below the normal and i have also placed a temp reading meter in the rad tank and got a reading of 110 F well it was under 110 f so i will say about 105 f

Something is wrong here?? The running temperature of a Rover V8 should be about 90 degrees C or 190 degrees F according to many references in the workshop manual.

Also if I understand you are measuring temperature in the rad tank? That is not the place to do it. The water has already been cooled by the time it gets to that side of the rad.

The temperature gauge sensor is in the inlet manifold and that is the important area. You also mentioned in an earlier post, about the temperature of water in the expansion tank, forget it its irrelevant. It depends upon too many variables.

If your gauge is accurate and the gauge temperature is well below normal then the thermostat could be broken.

Replace it for peanuts from Halfords with either an 82 degree stat for summer or 88 degree stat for winter.

While you are at it get a new pressure cap if the old one if letting water out into the catch bottle.

i have clean water and clean oil

That sounds OK! No water escaping into the engine and no oil escaping into the coolant.

Adam, and all this time I thought it was an SD1 from reading your profile.

Not much more I can help with really other than tell you how the SD1 system works and some tricks I learned along the way.

Youll have to figure out a way of observing if water is escaping when driving, but the symptoms tend to indicate both thermostat and pressure cap problems.

is it just me, or does it look like that green stuff has been coming out of that small hose in the top of the housing? That hose also looks swollen too?
