Just seen a clip for the new series of Top Gear, starting Sunday 7th October on BBC2
and
Clarkson in a yellow Series 1 SD1
and the other two....
one in an Austin Princess, the other in a Triumph Dolomite (sorry too busy trying to look at the SD1 in this briefest of clips to see who was in which car, but JC was definately in the SD1)
During the clip, they were having trouble starting the cars it seems this may be another unjust pop at 70s BL quality/reliability....
Whose SD1 did they use?

Show me a car from 70's that actually starts without hassle... especially now that their atleast 30 years old. It always takes its own rituals to get a carb car running. _________________ Owner of 3 Rovers and 1 MG.

Hammond in the Dolomite, May in the Princess.
I believe Top Gear have promised the SD1 was not wrecked. |

Additionally, my all too unpopular and allegedly troublesome twin stromberg-carbed, AED equipped, auto-choke 1983 V8 also starts first time, all weathers, all engine temperaures and runs very well.
Are we all tempting fate here? _________________ Lifelong SD1 fan - 1983 Rover 3500 Vanden Plas |

I've owned several Mini's from the 70's, notably my old 1970 Clubman, & they all started first time very time |

Well I had the manual choke conversion for the Strombergs so I'm trying that first. But we ran out of time (and equipment) when trying to tune them, so it runs a bit of a pig when cold. And when warm it's a bit rich on idle, but goes incredibly well - responsive, revs better, pulls away smoother and overall is much quicker - so we're getting there! _________________ Carl

My 1976 Hillman Imp starts everytime in icy weather. Loadsa choke, no throttle, key starter, reduce choke when it catches. Standard choke procedure.
Unless it's been standing with a hot engine for 10 minutes- then it's a pig to start as oil runs down the valve guides and fouls the plugs. It still goes 1st time though.
Will be building a new engine for it at christmas.

So no doubt that will mean they end up wrecking them as they do most cars! _________________ 1979 Rover SD1 V8-S
