Hello all, Brain picking time!
My TP Vitesse smokes VERY badly now on start-up, particularly when warm.
It has also developed a serious sounding rattle when cold. The rattle sounds like camshaft or higher, and is only bad when under load when cold.
It is NOT a tappet, as I know what they sound like, but it does make the noise at the same rate as one worn tappet (if that makes sense). You can't hear it with the bonnet up and revving, only when driving and under load.
Accompanying this noise is higher than usual oil pressure (maybe because it IS cold?).
I've had the easy rocker cover off to see if anything is loose (it's got the welded steel rockers), all looked OK.
Could distributor cause such a noise? Thinking advance mechanism, as it goes as soon as you come off the throttle a sniff.
I'm using about a litre of oil per 300 miles, and it's not leaking!!!!
Do we have valve stem oil seals on our V8's?
Any pointers gladly welcomed.

Yes, on the inlet valve stems only - later versions of the V8 have it
on inlet and exhaust (presumably for emissions reasons).

My Vitesse puffs smoke when it starts, particularly cold. I've been told
this is the valve stem seals disintegrating, not in itself a bit problem.
But I don't get the noise you describe, or the oil usage.

As Chris says, its prolly the valve stem oil seals.

This suggests worn cam lobe.

The high oil pressure could be due to blocked oil galleries

No! Not at cam speed.

I'm using about a litre of oil per 300 miles, and it's not leaking!!!!

So it must be being consumed by the fires inside your cylinders.

Get someone to follow you and report on smoking exhaust etc.

With a possible worn cam lobe, oil draining down the valve stems, burning oil at 1 lt per 300 miles and possible blocked oil galleries, I reckon the engine is due some maintenance.
