Had 2 new front inserts fitted today but have been told the struts themselves are past there best, Rimmers do a pair for £100 ish BUT that included new inserts which I have already bought,
Does anyone have a pair of decent non rusty front struts, springs and inserts not important they want to part with which I can paint and refit next year. _________________ 1979 Rover SD1 V8-S

Just had the same news on my car, car having new inserts fitted, new gaiters, bump stops as one insert had given up and started to leak, and of course these things must be replaced in pairs.
Just ordered the new struts from Rimmers, which means I too will have a superfluous pair of strut inserts....
Advice:- don't just buy new inserts, buy the new struts complete with new inserts, £47ea inclusive per side (unless of course you know with confidence your struts are 100% solid!) We're all going to have zillions of pairs of inserts kicking around otherwise
Oh as a precaution, and because they look rusty and tired, new springs too!!! _________________ Lifelong SD1 fan - 1983 Rover 3500 Vanden Plas |

Tim, do you know Eric Tansley in West Hallam? He's got tonnes of bits, am pretty sure he might have a decent pair of struts. I had a pair off him last month, & although the springs arent Vitesse ride height, they have made my car sit level at least! _________________ Auto Vitesse, gonna be a beast! |

Does anyone know what items the new struts from rimmers come with? From looking at the site I'm not sure if they come with gaitors, bump stops etc etc |

The struts from Rimmers have the inserts included and indeed already fitted within the struts. (part numbers:- NAM5154 (Right) / NAM5155 (Left)
Gaiters (CRC456), bump stops (CRC1276) and the lower spring gasket (CRC2744) are sold seperately, and of course the springs themselves are sold seperately too _________________ Lifelong SD1 fan - 1983 Rover 3500 Vanden Plas |

Why not just buy new struts & keep the spare inserts for when you need them in a few years?? _________________ Auto Vitesse, gonna be a beast! |

Thanks for that. The cost of seperate items like spring rubbers, bump stops, gaitors etc soon add up so if the complete strut had come with them then it'd be even better value.
I'm going to inspect the ones on the car and see what the condition is |
