I've recently fitted a spare coolant temp gauge, and it worked for 1 journey and then broke Sad Don't suppose anyone has a spare they don't need?

Thanks

It's for a Series 2. Ideally I need one that goes from 50 to 130 degrees to keep it how it should originally be.

Thanks

i have the whole gauge section which has the oil petrol and temp guages in it, with the plastic screen etc. you can have it for a tenner if you're going to the national, or i can post it for £15. or if someone you know is going to the national you can give them the money and i'll give them the unit.

That sounds good. Unfortunately I can't make the national, so if you could post it that'd be great.

PM me with how you want the money (Paypal, cheque, postal order etc all fine) and I'll get it over to you.

Thanks!

The Rimmers instruments are from the Indian Standard 2000 with the in-line 4
engine - the the gauges have a different scale, the speedo is km/h and the rev
counter is for a 4-cylinder ignition feed.

....but the coolant gauge has a different scale; the oil pressure gauge has
a different scale.

The Rimmers Standard 2000 ones are 0-100 lb/sqin, 60-140C. The V8
oil pressure is 0-60 lb/sqin, the coolant gauge quoted by the original
poster is 50-130C.

i think the spare one i have is a 60-140. all three series 2s i've had were 60-140. which cars have the 50-130?

Hmm, looks like early series 2 V8s had 50-130C temperature scale.
Early brochures show this scale, later the 60-140C. The parts guide
shows different part numbers for the temperature gauge from VIN
279481 onward - which is early 1983 production.

Now, I'm not sure the gauges will show the correct temperature without
changing the sender. I swapped the sender on my late Vitesse (60-140C
gauge) for a used one off a spare manifold - ever since the gauge reads
~100C, not ~90C - mid-point on both scales.

Mine (1982 S2 3500SE) had a 50-130 gauge, this was also shown in the manual. I recently swapped to a 60-140 gauge and it looked to me that the 100 mark was slightly to the right of centre so I thought it may still read about right. When it very briefly worked running temp showed about 90C which i guess is about right?

Well either way, a slightly over reading 60-140 gauge is better than no gauge at all, so I've order the one from Rimmers, along with an interface panel. Hopefully this will help me get rid of my electrical gremlins. If the oil pressure gauge scale is wrong I can just swap one of my others over. It'll mean the clock, fuel/coolant gauges, circuit board and voltage regulators (if thats what they are) will all be brand new.

Out of interest does the parts guide show different temp senders from VIN 279481?

Complete disaster whilst trying to get this gauge sorted out...

The new one from Rimmers turned up, with the wrong oil pressure scale as expected. So I swapped it for a spare and went to change the pods over. Put the new pod in, went to test it and realised the connector is different - mine is much smaller. Great. So I put the old oil pressure gauge and the new coolant temp gauge into the old pod, thinking that would work fine. I've hooked it all back up and went for a test run. Now the coolant wanring light stays on until the car warms up fully, and the coolant gauge seemed to start off working ok, but after a while the readings start going up and down all over the place. And the petrol gauge followed suit and started doing the same.

Getting annoyed now!!

All i can think at the moment is that I've got the 2 wires from the clock that attach to the oil pressure gauge the wrong way round when I put them back on, and that may somehow be causing the crazy readings on everything. If not I'm at a loss.

ksclark3522 - if you still have the gauges you offered me can you let me know what connector they have a the top of them. The new one I bought (along with a spare I had) has an open top slot for the multi-plug to go in. My original pod has an enclosed slot which is slightly smaller. Another early/late S2 difference I guess?

Also, the clock keyboard I ordered with the gauges had a loose middle button and marks all over the front. So that's gone back!

oh dear mate.
i take it when you refer to a multiplug you mean inside the pod, ie take the white circuit board off the back of the pod, giving access to the guage workings.
i have not had the back off it as yet. apart from the multiplug from the clock to the keyboard, mine has four wires from the clock.
1) yellow and grey
2)black and white. mine has earth written on it and someone's put an E on the bottom right nut on the back of the pod. this is above and to the left of the oil pressure warning light bulb.
3)orange and white. mine has live written on it, and someone has put an L on the back of the pod, on the nut to the left of the earth one mentioned above. this is to the right of the black wire which connects the oil pressure light
4)yellow and red. this also has live written on it.

the only clue i have as to where these wires go is what the previous owner wrote on the wires. i do not have access to a series two any more to look at it in situ. i have the unit here so if need be i could take the back off and investigate further, if this is any help to you.
a haynes manual would be a good place to look. have you got one?

either way, if i can be of any further help, give me a ring on 01763 838729 and ask for kev.
