Thats gorgeous! If I had not spent all my money on restoring the vitesse think my piggybank would have been smashed for this. |

It'll go for silly money, but is it anything other than a museum piece to go on
a glass plinth?
You couldn't use it - it'd be a shame to put miles on the car, and I'd see vast
expense to be able to use the car safely. New tyres, new suspension bushes, new
gearbox seals?? The body and interior may not rot over 30 years, but rubber
perishes.
I'd spend my money on JYF227N and burble around in that |

It's difficult to know what to do with a low mileage SD1. The SD1 deserves to be
driven, not holed up in a museum. But I for one couldn't put any miles on something
that's hardly even run-in....
My Vitesse is low miles at 56k. I'll only put 1-3k on it each year, which is about
what it's done each year of it's entire life - it's always done low yearly miles.
But the 4700 mile early SD1, you'd only be able to drive it a 150 miles each year
to keep the 'average' consistent - which makes it almost pointless! |

I'd spend my money on JYF227N and burble around in that | The same shame as the VDP EFi that used to be in the Rimmers' showroom. That car was in Rimmers' collection for a few years, and had just 6000 miles on the clock, but its condition looked more like 600 miles - it was stunning.
It was sold a few years ago (for quite strong money I have to assume) and I understand the new owner used it as a daily; last I heard it had tens of thousands on the clock and, while still a good example, had become just another old SD1. Terrible shame. |
Saw it last year at the national now with some 50 odd thousand miles on, clean but not without the odd rust bubble, dent etc, now worth a couple of grand as a tidy SD1 but nothing special anymore.
As for the one with 130 miles on thats been modified thats up the owners but you could do that to any SD1. _________________ 1979 Rover SD1 V8-S

And the purists out there will be less than delighted to know that it's modified (for which I and the previous owner will doubtless burn in hell). |
What i would do for a shell like that
And i would modify it aswell _________________ The original Monster wide arch-

these cars have got to be used, my idea of ownership is to drive them the v8 puts a big grin on your face and people stop and stare you don't get that locked away in a garage not taking it out incase it rains, _________________ "I think i've got a hole in me petrol tank"

[quote="5000SE"] | Quote: | That's okay for cars that are worth a fortune and viable for expensive restorations - nobody minds spending £30k on restoring a 250 GTO if it's worth 100 times that.
However, when an SD1 is only worth a fraction of a quality restoration, using them usually means killing them. |
That depends on how well you look after it and though rimmers parts are plentiful _________________ "I think i've got a hole in me petrol tank"

It's up to £7400 now....
Found a thread on austin-rover.co.uk about the car. Seems it was
for sale a couple of months ago for £2500 - yes 2.5k!!!!! Someone
has either realised how much a mint series 1 SD1 is worth, or
someone else is trebling their money!!!!

If I'd come across that car for 2.5k, I'd have sold my Vitesse then
and there..... Erm, maybe not |

Is it just me or do there seem to be a lot of early SD1s for sale recently? Or is it a case of if you own one you notice them more? can they really have survived in such munbers. There is one thing about this car, should it not be a single strap car? no sign of it on the pic of the underside of teh boot lid.

You are right, there are a lot of series 1 cars around at the moment - a lot of good ones!

Nope, this is correctly a twin-strap parcel shelf car. Only very early cars had the single
strap, 1976 production only. Other changes were the chrome->plastic washer jets.
Having said that, there are some anomalies. The 2300 and 2600 in the 'Two More for the
Road' film are 'R' registration cars, November 1976, both have twin-strap shelves in
the film. |
